The New York City Marathon was first run in 1970 and was held entirely in Central Park. It was later moved to the city streets and the course now includes all of the five main boroughs of New York City:
Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Manhattan.
It is currently the largest marathon in the world with more than 50,000 finishers and in excess of two million spectators.
